About us
Riverlane is the world’s first quantum engineering company. We are hardware obsessed, qubit agile and commercially driven. We’re a passionate team collaboratively tackling some of humanity’s biggest opportunities, from climate change to materials science and new drug discovery.
You will join our cross-disciplinary team of software developers, mathematicians, quantum information theorists, computational chemists and physicists – all world experts in their fields. Our collaborative, close-knit team has a track record of delivering high-quality R&D across the full quantum stack. As a growing company, you will have the freedom to think independently and creatively, as well as contribute to Riverlane’s business development.
About the role
You will join the interdisciplinary Discover research team, developing algorithms and research code for relevant applications for quantum computers, with a focus on quantum chemistry and solving of linear equations using quantum algorithms. Collaborating and communicating with end-users from academia and industry will be an important part of the role.
As a quantum scientist on the Discover team, your input into how quantum computers will be able to solve problems will be central to the success of the team. You will have the opportunity to work across our product portfolio and will be able to contribute to and lead projects as appropriate, pursuing work which best matches your ability and interest whilst developing your knowledge and skills.
What you will do
Conduct research, develop algorithms, and write software for quantum computing applications
Communicate results in the form of discussions and presentations to other team members and partners
Build expertise in the field of quantum computing through discussions with colleagues, reading relevant literature and gaining practical experience
Contribute to Riverlane’s international standing through writing scientific papers and presenting results at conferences as appropriate
Interact and work with a wide range of academic and industry partners
Use your knowledge about academic and commercial challenges to shape the research direction of the team
Help develop research and business development proposals to win external funding
Engage with the wider community through writing blogs and developing demonstrations
What we need
PhD (or equivalent industry experience) in a subject related to either quantum information, theoretical physics, quantum chemistry, computer science or mathematics.
Evidence of creative, high-quality academic work
Good programming skills, with a proven capability of understanding technical material and translating it into code

Experience working both independently and in a research team
Desire to learn, with a capacity both to lead and follow
Even better if you have
Experience in quantum software development and maintenance
Understanding of quantum error correction
Experience in quantum algorithms for fault-tolerant quantum computers
Experience in an application area such as Finance, Quantum Machine Learning, Cryptanalysis, Quantum Chemistry and Physics
