About the role
You will join our physical layer team, developing the understanding of qubit performance and behavior in real world environments, and enabling control systems, quantum error correction, and system integration through modelling and testing with hardware partners. The physical layer kit provides customers and partners detailed knowledge of internal processes relevant to the performance of quantum gates on physical qubits across multiple hardware platforms and enables the assessment and validation of the full stack performance of Deltaflow.OS, the operating system for fault tolerant, error corrected quantum computers.
As a research software developer, you will be expected to build the tools and systems that enable effective modelling and prediction of the performance of quantum computing hardware. This includes working with experimental data from hardware partners, connecting with key elements of the quantum operating system stack at the control and error correction levels, and ensuring that the tooling and testing systems we develop support the comprehensive performance of the quantum operating system.
What you will do
As a Research Software Developer/Senior Research Software Developer, you will:
Conduct research, develop methodologies, and write software to model physical qubits and their performance and noise.
Work with the team to enable an understanding of performance and validation of system capabilities across the operating system as well as improve the performance of qubits given limitations of the hardware and/or materials. This includes solving challenges that make quantum error correction easier and faster.
Interact and work with a wide range of academic and industry partners.
Build expertise in the field of quantum computing through discussions with colleagues, reading relevant literature and hands on experience.
Analyse experimental data, communicate results in the form of discussions and presentations to other team members and partners, and incorporate learnings from qubit performance data and knowledge into Riverlane tools and models.
Cement Riverlane’s strong international standing through writing papers and presenting at conferences.
Help develop research and business development proposals to win external funding
Engage with the wider community through writing blogs and developing demonstrations.
What we need
Knowledge of quantum computing is not required as training will be given.
PhD (or equivalent industry experience) in a highly numerate subject, such as a science, mathematics, computer science, quantum information theory or engineering
Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Proven capability of understanding and explaining technical material
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a track record of communicating technical results to colleagues and other audiences
Experience working both independently and in a team
Even better if you have experience of
Creating and releasing your own project
Qubit design and performance in one of superconducting, ion trap, or photonic-based quantum computers
Quantum control methods and tools

Understanding of software engineering best practices and agile methodologies
