About Us

Cambridge, UK | Full-time | Permanent | 2 Positions Available

Riverlane builds ground-breaking software to unleash the power of quantum computers. Backed by leading venture-capital funds and the University of Cambridge, we develop software that transforms quantum computers from experimental technology into commercial products.

You will join our cross-disciplinary team of software developers, mathematicians, quantum information theorists, computational chemists and physicists – all world experts in their fields. Our collaborative, close-knit team has a track record of delivering high-quality R&D across the full quantum stack. As a growing company, you will have the freedom to think independently and creatively, as well as contribute to Riverlane’s business development.

We offer a competitive salary, private medical insurance, health cashplan, life assurance, equity options, and relocation costs.

About the role

You will join our Quantum Science team, developing algorithms and code at the intersection of theory and practical implementation. We are a highly collaborative, cross discipline team with experts in the control systems used in quantum computers, software engineering, chemistry, algorithms, discrete mathematics and statistics. Working together we take a holistic view of what it takes to get a quantum computer to solve problems that matter.

What you will do

As a Research Scientist you will:

  • Conduct research, develop methodologies and write software to model quantum computers and work with the team to solve key bottlenecks in bringing about practical applications. This includes moving computation lower in the control stack and the practicalities of quantum error correction.
  • Interact and work with a wide range of academic and industry partners.
  • Build expertise in the field of quantum computing through discussions with colleagues, reading relevant literature and hands on experience.
  • Analyse experimental data and communicate results in the form of discussions and presentations to other team members and partners
  • Cement Riverlane’s strong international standing through writing papers and presenting at conferences.
  • Have the opportunity to contribute to the business development and strategic direction of the company.
  • Engage with the wider community through writing blogs and developing demonstrations.

What we need

Knowledge of quantum computing is not required as training will be given.

  • PhD (or equivalent industry experience) in a highly numerate subject, such as a science, mathematics, computer science, quantum information theory or engineering
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Proven capability of understanding and explaining technical material
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a track record of communicating technical results to colleagues and other audiences
  • Working both independently and in a team
  • Strong ability in Mathematics or computer programming

Even better if you have experience of

  • Numerical programming
  • Error correction
  • Statistical inference
  • Algorithms development especially discrete mathematics such as combinatorics
  • Quantum Algorithms
